Financial Controller

Whether you’re a steam train enthusiast or simply brilliant with finances, this is a fantastic opportunity to apply your accounting and leadership experience and make your mark on a thriving and progressive charitable organisation, and one that welcomes change to drive the charity forwards.

Based in the heart of Bury, the East Lancashire Railway (ELR) is a lovingly restored heritage railway which journeys for twelve miles through picturesque scenery from Heywood in the East to Rawtenstall in the North.

As one of the most popular visitor attractions in Greater Manchester, the railway welcomes over 200,000 visitors a year with well-equipped stations complete with cafés, pubs, gift shops and a Transport Museum and plenty of things to see and do around the line.

We’re looking to recruit an experienced Financial Controller to lead the accounting function and manage the Finance Team, currently made up of a Finance Officer and a Finance Assistant.

What will this role of Financial Controller entail?

As part of managing the accounting function of ELR, as the Financial Controller you’ll take the lead with budgeting, financial forecasting, business planning, and financial reporting. Working closely with and reporting to the General Manager, you’ll set and monitor department budgets, and ensure efficient financial transaction processing. Where required, there will be strategic advice and support available from the Director of Finance. Your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Developing systems, processes and initiatives
  • Producing management information, including KPI’s, monthly management accounts, and capital spend reports
  • Leading and motivating your direct reports, creating a positive, high achieving culture
  • Proactively monitoring cash, performing weekly bank reconciliations
  • Ensuring credit sales are invoiced and credit control is effectively carried out
  • Providing financial input and support to commercial departments to aid decision making on fares and event planning

What will I need to be considered for this Financial Controller vacancy?

There will be plenty of room to make a difference to our charitable organisation with this role, fully utilising your range of experience, knowledge and skills. You will already have;

  • Proven experience with both financial and management accounting
  • Superb leadership skills with experience managing a team
  • A proactive, participative and flexible approach to problem solving
  • Experience identifying and implementing new processes, systems and initiatives
  • Experience managing and championing change

What will I receive in return?

As the Financial Controller, you will be part of a passionate and close-knit team where you’ll have the opportunity to really make your mark and demonstrate your skills.

You’ll receive a competitive salary, benefits and the opportunity to partake with social activities, and receive railway-based perks such as a company pension scheme and free travel on East Lancashire Light Railway services.

Contract: Permanent, full time hours within Monday to Friday.

Whilst not compulsory, employees are encouraged to participate with volunteering on some event days. Whilst hard work, they are good fun, and you could be getting involved with activities such as meet and greet at Thomas the Tank Engine events, acting as a steward on the train for the Santa specials etc. And if you’re keen to do so, you could even train to be a guard or driver.

Location: Bury, Lancashire

All applications for this Financial Controller vacancy are to be submitted online, and strictly no agency calls or agency CV submissions.
