Zirconium chemicals are produced at the Swinton site from a range of raw materials. Our lightweight magnesium alloys are machined or extruded to custom shapes and specifications to meet our customer requirements, and are used in high performance, safety critical aerospace, defence, healthcare, oil and gas and Formula 1.

The Role – Chemical Science Degree Apprentice (Materials Quality Control)

As a Chemical Science Degree Apprentice (Materials Quality Control), you will be working towards a BSc in Chemical Science through an apprenticeship program at Manchester Metropolitan University, which includes one day per week of online learning with occasional units taught face to face at the university.

Alongside your studies, you’ll be working as part of the Materials Quality Control Team, conducting precise and accurate routine analytical testing on Incoming Raw Materials, In-Process Control samples and Final Product material, involving both the use of traditional chemistry techniques and the use of a wide variety of analytical instrumentation (for example XRF, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, Particle Size, Surface Area and Porosity instruments). Your duties will also include, although not be limited to:

• Maintaining a high standard of laboratory operating conditions regarding equipment, validity of calibration standards, housekeeping, analytical records, etc. by adhering to established standards
• Ensuring compliance with all health, safety and environment policies

Our Requirements – Chemical Science Degree Apprentice (Materials Quality Control)

• A minimum of 104 UCAS points at A-level or equivalent (grades BCC or similar), with A levels including Chemistry and Mathematics
• GCSE Mathematics and English Language (grade A*-C / 9-4) or equivalent
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
• Ability to read and understand laboratory related materials, with laboratory-based skills such as precise weighing and pipetting
• Strong mathematical skills and familiarity with algebra to perform relevant analytical calculations
• Professional interpersonal skills, and a team player with a committed, flexible and positive approach to work
• Strong attention to detail

The Package

As a Chemical Science Degree Apprentice (Materials Quality Control), you will join the team based within our Swinton (Greater Manchester) office, and benefit from:

• A starting salary of £14,500, (equivalent to £7.53 per hour) to increase over time once you have completed your degree, plus bonus
• A fully paid for degree level qualification through Manchester Metropolitan University
