Lead Chef

How would you like to work in a truly unique environment, working across a variety of food and beverage outlets, where you can use your existing skills and continue to develop under the leadership of our Head Chefs?

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Lead Chef on a temporary basis to cover a period of maternity leave. Our Chefs manage the day-to-day running of our kitchens, reporting to our Executive Head Chefs and mentoring our junior Chef team. You’ll prepare and cook food working across a variety of food and beverage outlets, where no two days will be the same! You could be working in our authentic Southeast Asian inspired Manado Street Kitchen, which serves Indonesian food for up to 450 people; other outlets at the zoo include a variety of restaurants serving traditional family favourites, as well as coffee shops, kiosks, staff canteen and a picnic parlour. 

As a Lead Chef you will:

  • Lead the daily kitchen operation in line with our specifications
  • Take part in monthly stock takes
  • Assist with daily orders
  • Ensure full compliance with our food safety policy
  • Ensure the kitchen is ready for internal and external audits

The Package

You’ll be working sociable hours typically during zoo opening hours which are generally between 10am and 6pm, although evening or early morning work will be required for events such as weddings or corporate functions. Contract hours are 40 per week, 5 days out of 7 on a rota basis including weekends and bank holidays and overtime will be paid for agreed additional hours.

  • Temporary contract for 7 months
  • £24,987.75 (to be pro rata’d for 7 months), based on 40 hours per week
  • 33 days annual leave pro rata (33 days based on 12 months service)
  • Staff pass so you can visit the zoo during your time off plus multiple complimentary tickets for your friends and family

Our Requirements

  • Demonstrable Chef experience in a high-volume business
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of current food and trends
  • Experience of mentoring a junior Chef team
  • Experience of running a kitchen
  • Stock handling experience
  • Excellent customer service and team work skills

Although not essential, the following would be desirable:

  • A Food Safety Level 2 qualification is preferable
